champion Paul Mainwaring funded champagne lifestyle with swindled NHS cash 25/04/12
A patient’s champion lived a champagne lifestyle paid for by cash he swindled
from the NHS. Health consultant Paul Mainwaring, 65, pocketed £68,000 of money
from NHS Trusts through a VAT scam. He also swindled £40,000 in fraudulent
housing and council tax benefits and used the cash to fund his lavish holidays.

Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is a brand new NHS organisation, made up of local GPs and other local healthcare practitioners. The CCG will become formally established on April 1st 2013 and it will plan and purchase the health services of Bury patients but for the next year it is beginning its’ work in shadow form.
The CCG sees the patients’ voice as central to working in new ways and it is seeking to set up a Patients’ Cabinet, to be led by its’ Chair - a Patients’ Champion. It is planned that there will be 12 other members of the Patients Cabinet - ideally two from each of the six townships.

Pennine Acute Trust seeks public nominations for
new Patients’ Choice Award 25/04/12
THE Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking
nominations from the public for a new special ‘Pennine Patient’s Choice Award’
as part of its Staff Awards 2012.
The Trust’s Staff Awards 2012 is to be held in June.
It consists of 12 categories which recognise the very best of patient care,
dedication and innovation across the Trust’s five hospitals and its
staff.
Council offices could be sold 14/04/12
Up to a quarter of Bury Council’s office and admin
buildings could be sold off in a bid to balance the books as an alternative to
slashing jobs and services.
Familiar landmarks such as Athenaeum House, Castle
Buildings and Connexions in Broad Street could ultimately be disposed off as
town hall bosses strive to achieve £300,000 savings in accommodation costs.
Health group defends care for young disabled 14/04/12
NHS Bury has been accused of being one of five primary care trusts in the
country that failed to acknowledge the existence of disabled children in their
catchment areas.
The allegation has been made in a report published by the Care Quality
Commission (CQC), based on data from 151 primary care trusts (PCTs) and in the
face of official estimates that one-in-20 under-16s has a disability.
Sheltered housing could be bulldozed 14/04/12
A sheltered housing complex which was opened more than 40 years ago could be
demolished to make way for bungalows.
Johnnie Johnson Housing Association (JJHA) has asked Bury Council for
permission to knock down Wesley house
in Tottington.
The Cheshire-based firm would build 12 bungalows designed for older people
and sold at 75 per cent of the market value.

May council elections: who is standing in your ward? 06/04/12
Nominations have now closed for the Bury Council elections to be held on May 3.
Candidates will contest 17 seats, one in each of the borough’s wards, as one third of the council comes up for election. Polling cards are now being sent to households, and residents have
until April 18 to make sure they are on the electoral register.

Despite opinions being divided over whether it was appropriate to

Frontline jobs to be axed at Fairfield 09/03/12
Health bosses are set to axe around 40 staff at Fairfield Hospital after a drastic fall in minor operations and clinic appointments.
Bosses say the amount of non-urgent work which primary care trusts (PCTs) are asking Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to undertake has fallen by up to 70 per cent since last April.

James is last baby born at hospital 09/03/12
Baby James Mark Nuttall may be only a few days old, but he is already in the history books.
For the 8lb 7oz boy was the last baby to be born at Fairfield General Hospital.
He was born just before in-patient maternity services were transferred to North Manchester General Hospital.
Staff at the unit made sure his birth was extra special for new mum Jess Holbrook, aged 25, and her partner, Stephen Nuttall, aged 35.

Hospitals could lose up to 160 jobs 09/03/12
A health trust that treats the people of Bury could cut 160 jobs.
Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Fairfield, North Manchester General, Royal Oldham hospitals and Rochdale Infirmary, announced the proposed cuts this afternoon.
The Trust, which claims the cuts are necessary because fewer patients are being referred, has started a 90-day consultation period with unions.
‘Privilege’ to have last babies born at Fairfield 01/03/12
When Hayley Miller gave birth to her son this week, the moment had an extra special significance.
The 5lb 6oz tot was one of the last babies to be born at Fairfield General Hospital, as the in-patient maternity services shut this week.
The baby, who has not yet been named, was born at 9pm on Sunday. He was one of up to 2,300 people every year who start life at the hospital.

Campaign for clean streets 01/03/12
Tottington schoolchildren are helping to spearhead a campaign to rid the village of the menace of dog fouling.
The youngsters have designed hard-hitting leaflets highlighting the problem which have been delivered to more than 30 residents on the Booth Farm Estate.
Previous complaints to Bury Council about dog fouling have resulted in the local authority stepping up out-of-hours patrols in the area in an effort to catch and fine irresponsible dog owners. At a full council meeting in February, council leader Cllr Michael Connolly promised action after a resident raised the issue.

Lifeline society never gave up in the long fight 01/03/12
The closure of the maternity unit also signals the end of Fairfield Baby Lifeline Society.
It was set up in April, 1979, by the late Dr Syed Haider, Sister Jackie Blease and several parents to raise funds for vital equipment on the special care baby unit.
Fairfield General Hospital became the first hospital in the country to have a registered charity supporting neo-natal intensive care.

U-turn on plan to charge disabled drivers to park 01/03/12
Controversial plans to start charging disabled drivers to park have been scrapped.
The eleventh-hour amendment was made to Bury Council’s budget which will bring in cuts of almost £8.9 million for the next financial year.
Although council tax bills will be frozen for a second successive year, council tenants face an average rents increase of 6.2 per cent from April — but this rise is 1.43 per cent below the original proposed rise of 7.63 per cent.

Tours of new maternity units being offered 01/03/12
A video has been produced to help explain where and how Bury residents can access maternity and children’s services after the closures.
The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Fairfield, has put the video on its website, You Tube and on its Twitter account @pennineacute nhs.
From tomorrow, overnight maternity and children’s services will transfer from Fairfield to North Manchester General and the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Bury maternity unit shuts for the last time 01/03/12
Maternity staff at the Royal Bolton Hospital say they are prepared for an increase in patients following the closure of the baby unit at Fairfield Hospital, Bury.
Mums-to-be are expected to be travelling from Bury to Bolton to give birth now the phased closure of the Fairfield unit has started.
It will close for good on Friday.
Services were scrapped as part of the £120 million Making It Better Programme, which aims to improve healthcare in the community and concentrate hospital services in fewer, larger units.

Council tax bills in Bury will be frozen for a second successive year although local authority tenants face an average rents increase of 6.2 per cent. The decisions were endorsed at a special council budget meeting last night (Wed) which also approved savings of almost £8.9 million for the next financial year as part of a package of cuts totalling £17.7 million between now and 2015.

Staff on move next week as maternity unit closes 23/02/12
Fairfield Hospital’s in-patient maternity and children’s wards will close next week.
Doctors, midwives and nursing staff will start the move to North Manchester General Hospital, in Crumpsall, on Tuesday and the last baby to be born at the Bury hospital will be delivered on Wednesday.

A senior nurse has expressed concerns about the care of children when services are moved from Fairfield Hospital. From next week, there will be no overnight children’s unit, and youngsters admitted after 9pm will be transferred to either North Manchester General or another specialist hospital.

Council tax bills in Bury will be frozen for the coming financial year, it was agreed by councillors last tonight (Wednesday 22 February).The budget meeting also endorsed savings of £7.9 million in 2012/13, as part of a package of savings totalling £17.7 million between now and 2015. This comes on top of savings of £14.4 million being made in the current financial year (2011/12).

Equal pay appeal hearing will go ahead 16/02/12
Council bosses and Unison officials have failed to defer an appeal hearing over equal pay scheduled for next month despite both sides reaching agreement over the five-year dispute.
Last week, the Bury Times reported that the local authority and the biggest town hall union had reached a settlement over the issue with offers being made to hundreds of current and former female employees who were paid less than their male colleagues for doing work of equivalent value.

Countdown to the closure of Fairfield Maternity Unit 16/02/12

Health Campaigner, Rochdale Councillor Jean Ashworth, has told the Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust that staff need to be kept informed if redundancies are set to be announced.
At a meeting of the Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny meeting, Councillor Ashworth directly asked Tom Wilders, Director of Strategic Planning at the Trust, if redundancies are set to be announced. Mr Wilders said he could not comment.

Five men have been arrested as part of an investigation into alleged corruption.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police's serious crime division executed warrants at addresses in Altrincham, Kersal, Didsbury and Bacup, Lancashire, and arrested five men, aged between 45 and 69, on suspicion of corruption in a public office.

Plans to penalise social tenants living in homes deemed too large for their needs could cost families in Bury up to £966 per year, new figures reveal.

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is conducting a survey to find out what local patients, service users, carers and the public think about mental health and whether they have ever been discriminated against because of a mental health condition.
Pennine Care provides community and mental health services in the boroughs of Bury, Oldham and Rochdale, as well as mental health services in Stockport, Tameside and Glossop.
It’s the first time the Trust has conducted a stigma survey on this scale and we want to hear from a range of different people about what they think stigma is, whether they have experienced it and what we can do to help stop it.

What people can do to avoid spreading the “winter vomiting” bug 31/10/11
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) have issued advice on how to avoid the “winter vomiting” bug norovirus and prevent the infection spreading to other people.
Norovirus infection is the most common cause of vomiting and diarrhoea in the UK, affecting 600,000 to one million people every year. The symptoms are severe vomiting and or diarrhoea, but it is generally a short-lived illness from which the majority of people will recover in 12 to 60 hours without treatment other than resting and taking fluids to replace lost liquids.

Bury people can become life safers by volunteering with the Community Action to Promote Early Detection of Cancer (CAPED) project.
Recognising the signs and symptoms of cancer early can save lives and local people are being given an opportunity to learn about these, particularly the most common cancers - breast, bowel and lung cancer. This knowledge can then be used to spot signs on yourself, advise family and friends and be valuable to the local community.

Region hit hard by flu last winter 14/09/11
Last winter over 1,290 people were admitted to hospitals across the region with a primary diagnosis of flu between November and February, with 331 people admitted to critical care over a four week period, figures released by NHS North West show.
Jane Cummings, chief nurse for the North West, is urging anyone who is entitled to a free flu jab to take up the offer as soon as possible this year.

Health experts in Bury are backing a campaign to restrict alcohol advertising in a bid to reduce the number of children and young people harmed by underage drinking.
